Pool Maintenance – Replacement of Filter Media Every 4-6 Years
Replacement of filter media according to PWTAG should be carried out every 4 – 6 years; this is due to the wear and tear the sand goes through during each backwash. Plus the media eventually becomes congested with Bio-films and solids that accumulate over time. This of course impacts on the efficiency of the filtration system and more demand on the circulation pumps is required to push the same volume of water through the system to achieve designed turn over. So in effect the longer you leave the same media in situ, after 4 years, the more it’s going to cost you.
Balance Tank Cleaning
Along with filtration, chemical dosing is an integral part of keeping the pool water well balanced, making it safe and clean for bathers to use. Body fats, moisturisers, false tans, perfumes, salts, etc are substances which bathers bring into the pool on their person. These substances adhere to the water particles causing bio-films to form on the water’s surface. As the water enters the balance tank (and also the filters) the Bio-films form a membrane on the balance tank walls and ceilings giving Bacteria, Legionnaires, Pseudomonas & E-Coli a platform on which to grow.
Bacteria, Legionnaires, Pseudomonas and E-Coli Prevention
Bacteria, Legionnaires, Pseudomonas and E-Coli grow at an alarming rates and thrive in such places as balance tanks and filters. PWTAG advise balance tanks to be cleaned and inspected every 12 months – “prevention is better than cure”.
Pool Maintenance – Prevent Bio-Film Causing Corrosion
Bio-films also lead to a scale build-up on heat exchangers; this prevents efficient heating of the pool water. In some cases Bio-Films cause corrosion of metal surfaces within the pool circulating system as some Bio-films have a pH of about 1.0 which is very acidic.
Balance Tanks & Filters – Need Confined Spaces Qualified Contractors
To prevent these situations occurring, Pool Maintenance Ltd can help you. Due to balance tanks and filters being classed as confined spaces only fully qualified personnel are allowed entry.
All our operatives are confined space trained and are fully equipped with the relevant emergency rescue equipment such as tripod, winch, harness, 10 min escape sets, gas detectors etc. Method statements and risk assessments are issued prior to any works carried out and an acceptance note signed upon completion.
Balance Tanks & Filters – Confined Spaces Overnight Operation
It may be worth noting that Pool Maintenance Ltd can carry out these works overnight, causing minimum disruption to the facility.
